November 5, 2010, Atlanta, GA]------In a heart-rending case for all parties involved, a mother and daughter from Atlanta, Georgia, got sentenced on Thursday, to a combined total of 44 years in prison for a deadly vehicular accident.
24 year old Aimee Michael, a college graduate, was charged, convicted and sentenced to 36 long years behind bars, for fleeing the scene of an accident, in which 5 people died. Her mother, Sheila Michael, received 8 years, for helping her daughter cover up her involvement in the hit and run.
The accident reportedly occured Easter Sunday, April 12, 2009, while Aimee was behing the wheel of her mother's BMW. She reportedly skidded, when another car sideswiped her, careening her into two other vehicles.
This pileup, which happened on Camp Creek Parkway, resulted in tragedy, killing a family of four in a Mercedes 230. There were husband and wife, Robert and Delisia Carter, their 2 month old son Ethan and 9 year old daughter, Kayla.
The driver of the other vehicle, 43 year old Tracie Johnson, survived the crash but had to be airlifted to emergency care with serious injuries. Her six year old daughter, Morgan was not so lucky. She was killed in the accident.
Aimee fled the scene of the accident and her mother, who was a school principal at the time, helped her conceal evidence by repairing the car.
A neighbor reportedly saw the car being repaired and called the police. She was arrested on April 23, 13 days after the tragic accident.
This is heart wrenching, as a parent I'm not sure what I would hve done, but I believe my instinct would be to protect mines... I do agree with the judge though because Aimee might have gotten a lighter sentence had she turned herself in.
